...from Denali to Skagway

August 29, 2006

Tuesday, I think. (What happened to Sunday and Monday?).

Hi all!

It’s been a long time since I have had an internet connection, and truth be known, it is 2 pm East Coast time, Tuesday the 19th, and I have yet to be able to send my email from August 26 – Saturday.

Once this email goes, so will that one, so look for it somewhere close by.

These past three days have been an extraordinary adventure, driving south and east (truly vast distances) from Denali Park to Skagway (Skaguay to the folks who live there), then boarding the Alaska Ferries MS Columbia (pretty big ship, not your run-of-the-mill Staten Island Ferry), and staring a wonderful three day cruise.

Much of the drive, spread out over Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, was tedious.

And one stretch, from a crossroads better forgotten (Beaver Creek, Yukon Territories) to Whitehorse, was utterly grim – on a stretch of the Alaska Highway that made the Dalton Road to and above the Arctic Circle look good by comparison.

But for at least half of each day’s drive, I passed through alpine wonderland after alpine wonderland.

And each time I thought, well, that’s it, I’d go for maybe another hour through low hills and scrub pine, turn a corner, and then BAM! More beauty even more staggering than I’d seen before.

The last stretch south to Skagway AK from Whitehorse YT was a non-stop jawdropper (especially White Pass), folks, worth it to drive (or see by railway

cut out of sheer mountainside rocky cliffs) even if you came for the weekend just for that.

There is so much more to say and share. But this email per force has to be short.

We are docking in Sitka, and this will be the last possibility (if at all) to find internet service and send these emails and pictures to you before Friday.

If I do not succeed with emails here, then it will be only Friday morning, in Washington State, that I’ll be able to pull it off. If then.

What a blast! WHAT A BLAST!

Later…
